2016 Michigan Solar Home and Sustainabilty Tour
Saturday October 1, 2016
American Solar Energy Society’s (ASES) 21st National Solar Home Tour, the world's largest grassroots solar event, was held on October 1 in 8 Michigan communities. The Great Lakes Renewable Energy Assoc., the Michigan state chapter of ASES, assists volunteer coordinators who organize the community tours. While this year Lansing had a virtual solar tour which shared six solar stories with 28 participants, most communities had site tours of homes. Some communities had one or two homes and Ypsilanti had three dozen sites to visit.
One of the highlights of the Chelsea Area Solar Tour was the Trumpy house in Grass Lake. The Trumpy family, mom, dad and two young girls, live 100% off grid and grow over 95% of their own food. The large, beautiful home features post and beam and straw bale construction with mud based stucco finish. Electricity is supplied with a 3 kW tracker system - a dozen SunPower panels mounted 25' high on a 2 axis tracker, 60 golf cart battery storage and 8 kW inverter. There is also a 3’x6' solar thermal hot water panel system to boost hot water seasonally. Cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, turkeys and a large raised bed vegetable garden provide home grown food. Next year's Solar Home Tour will again be the first Saturday in October.
